Custom chenille patches are made by looping plush acrylic or wool yarn across a heavy-duty felt foundation. This generates the iconic fuzzy, carpet-like pile texture celebrated on traditional American high school varsity letterman jackets, collegiate apparel, and retro streetwear.
Felt backings form the border perimeter around the chenille pile. Single felt provides a clean single-color frame. Double felt introduces a contrasting second color halo (the classic varsity look), while triple felt adds an extra tier of depth and color framing to match multi-tone school or brand palettes.
Because chenille loops are plush and thick, fine lettering under 0.5 inches cannot be produced in pure chenille yarn. Instead, we produce hybrid chenille & embroidery patches: the mascot or primary letter is formed in plush chenille, while delicate facial details, graduation years, and championship text are rendered in crisp flat embroidery.
Traditional Sew-On backing is strongly recommended for heavy wool varsity jackets and leather sleeves to ensure permanent lifelong attachment. We also supply commercial Iron-On heat-seal backings for fleece hoodies and Peel-and-Stick backings for framing and awards plaques.
For garments with chenille patches attached, dry cleaning or gentle hand washing in cool water is recommended to maintain pile fluffiness. When machine washing, turn the item inside out, select a delicate cycle with mild detergent, and air-dry flat. Never apply direct iron heat to the chenille loops.
